INSIGHT AND ANALYSIS OF SMALL BUSINESS SENTIMENT AND ECONOMIC TRENDS
LiveOak Bank is one of the most well-known SBA lenders in the SMB space. They just released their Q4 2022 report on small business sentiment. The report shows that 43% of SMBs had lower profits in 2022 and just 36% of SMBs expect their financial condition to improve over the NTM.
The BusinessPulse, powered by Barlow Research Associates, Inc., provides detailed analysis and reporting on small business sentiment including economic position, economic confidence, and credit outlook for small and middle market companies. Barlow Research surveys more than 2,800 companies annually across the U.S. to gather current viewpoints and draws on 10 years of data to provide in-depth research on economic trends to the commercial banking sector.

Net Dollar Retention: The âHoly Grailâ SaaS Metric
Growth is important but you also want to make sure that you keep your existing customers and reduce churn. In SaaS, one way to measure this is through net dollar retention. How much of your recurring revenue are you keeping each month or year?
Why Is NDR So Important For Software?
As private equity buyers, we look at mature SaaS businesses. Unlike VCs that invest based mostly on future potential, PE buyers invest based on whatâs already been built.
SaaS businesses are built on intangible assets consisting of their actual software and the customers that use it. Net dollar retention can measure the quality of these two intangible assets.

The Smallest Changes That Had the Largest Impacts: 4 CEO Case Studies
As the saying goes - â20% of your effort will lead to 80% of the result.â How do we know which 20% to focus on? Mineola Search Partners tackles this question.
When taking over a new business, new CEOs often speak of operational âlow hanging fruitâ, so I wanted to ask this same question to 4 different CEOs to learn more about just what this low hanging fruit is.
Each CEO that Iâll be speaking with today is at a different stage of their journey: Betsy, who Iâll begin the episode with, is still in her first year in the CEO seat. Sheret, our next leader, has been CEO of his company for ~2 years. Robin Kovitz has been leading her company for ~8 years, and finally Adrian, our final CEO, ran his company for ~7 years before a successful exit to a strategic acquiror in 2019.
Does growth and success tend to result from a large number of seemingly small changes, or a small number or larger changes? Thatâs what weâll endeavor to answer today, informed by 4 CEOs at very different stages of their respective journeys.

Iâd like to see a two sentence summary of how you got to fatFIRE.
Fat FIRE = Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE). A user in the r/fatFIRE Reddit community asked readers to provide a quick blurb about how they reached this life outcome. Interesting Reddit post.

New Marketplace
This week I had the pleasure of speaking with the founder of OneDeal. Itâs a new business marketplace that aims to compete withâŠð¥âŠBizBuySell. Interestingly, they are backed by one of the worldâs top startup accelerators, Techstars. Really curious to see how they go about disrupting such a behemoth.

Earlier this week I sent out an update to all the due diligence service providers in the DueDilio network. I want to share a condensed version with you.

Background checks, technology, and various types of commercial due diligence round out the most requested types of services.
